Hockey jerseys are cut big — they're made to fit over shoulder pads. That's great for streetwear, but it also means picking a size can be confusing. Here's how a hockey jersey should fit, whether you want it relaxed, oversized or worn as a dress.
Why hockey jerseys run big
On the ice, a jersey has to go over shoulder pads, elbow pads and padded pants. So even a "normal" hockey jersey has wide sleeves, a roomy body and a long hem. Fashion hockey jerseys keep that silhouette on purpose — it's the whole look.
How should a hockey jersey fit? Three looks
1. Relaxed (your usual size)
Shoulder seams drop a little past your shoulders, the hem lands around the hip, and the sleeves reach your wrist. This is the easiest everyday fit — over a tee or a thin hoodie.

2. Oversized (size up once)
The streetwear fit. The hem drops below the hip, the sleeves cover part of your hands and the body drapes. Best over a hoodie with baggy jeans or wide-leg trousers.

3. Jersey dress (size up once or twice)
Hem around mid-thigh, sleeves pushed up or pulled over your hands. Wear it with leggings or tights and boots, and add a belt if you want shape.
Quick sizing rules
- Between sizes? Go up for the streetwear look, down for a cleaner fit.
- Layering a hoodie underneath? Take your usual size — the jersey is already built to go over layers.
- Want it as a dress? Size up, especially if you're petite.
- Gift and not sure? Choose your usual size. Oversized pieces are forgiving.

How should a hockey jersey fit for guys vs girls?
Hockey jerseys are unisex. Guys usually go relaxed or oversized over a hoodie; girls often size up to wear it as a dress or knot it at the waist over wide-leg jeans. See 8 hockey jersey outfit ideas and what to wear to a hockey game for full outfits.

FAQ
Should I size up in a hockey jersey?
Only if you want an oversized or dress fit. Hockey jerseys already run big, so your usual size gives a relaxed streetwear look.
Do hockey jerseys run big?
Yes. They're designed to fit over hockey pads, so the body and sleeves are roomier than a regular shirt.
Can you wear a hoodie under a hockey jersey?
Yes — that's one of the best ways to wear it. Stick to your usual size and the hood sits nicely over the collar.
